I will be leaving Jaén one week sooner than planned. On the 3oth of June I start the travelling part of my trip. But I still have some short stories to share with you.
- Our trip to the border of Ecuador. For our visa we had to travel to Ecuador. Because I sleep easily in cars, planes, trains, ... was leaving at 4.3o am sharp no big deal. Or so I thought... the road was horrible. Once arrived in Namballe we had to do a little go and back across the river in order to receive our stamps. But it worked, we were 2 days in Ecuador...not :-).
- Here in Jaén people are sitting with three on a motorbike, with 9 in a car. No te preocupes! (hakuna matata)
- On the main square a police officer shot himself. Suicide. Some say he was playing with his gun, others claim it is a love thing. The idiom 'news runs fast' was demonstrated in this town.
- Jaén celebrated its 187th birthday. There was a circus in town, guitar players from Peru were invited and a band played on the main square. But on that event people forgot the show in front of them, they prefered to look, or let us say stare, at the two whities.
- Yesterday I ate a different type of maïs. Oh boy, my stomach protested on that one afterwards. It became so badly that I prefered to leave the village La Cascarilla a bit sooner then expected. On moto. Should have been fun, but every hole in the road gave me a painful contraction. On a world scale not so bad off course. Again another adventure ;-).
- The television shows here, telenovelas, are full of drama and complications (in love with A, once married to B, a child from C and engaged to D). The Bold and the Beautiful is peanuts if you would compare. The show 'Betty la fea' (Ugly Betty in the States, Lotte in Holland and Sara in Belgium) originates from Colombia. I can see why now :-).

We volgen uw blog hier een beetje nu je aan de andere kant van de wereld zit. Maar in de wereld ons dorp is Jaén nu ook weer niet zo ver.... Een paar vraagjes:
1. Hier is de laatste maanden heel wat te doen om de wereldwijde verhoging van de voedselprijzen. Speelt dat probleem ginder ook in de Andes-Peru-Zuid Amerika ?
2. Feest 187 jaar in de stad: Tiens , Jaén moet al langer bestaan dan 1821, het jaar dat Bolivar Peru losweekte van de spaanse kroon en bij zijn Groot Colombië voegde; enfin dacht ik toch. Bestond daar werkelijk geen stad voor 1820 ?
3. Als je naar Huamantanga geweest zijt, ben je dan langs Cajamarca gepasseerd ? Zoniet, en je geraakt er nog eens, maar eens een foto van jou in de kamer, waar de Inca Atahualpa in 1532 het goud liet opstapelen voor zijn bevrijding . Het hielp niet want hij werd toch vermoord door Pizarro.

Aan nonkel Frans in de Lage Landen. Een fantastische reactie hoewel ik niets anders had verwacht:
1.Inderdaad, ook hier zijn de voedselprijzen gestegen. En door transportmoeilijkheden erbovenop (slechte wegen, regen) is dat voor sommige producten een verdubbeling van de prijs (bvb olie om te koken).
2.Deze regio is nog niet zo oud, om de simpele reden dat de bossen van Huamantanga vroeger tot hier kwamen en dus veel uitgestrekter waren dan nu. Sommige dorpen die ik bezocht, zoals La Rinconada, bestaan nog geen 50 jaar.
3.Cajamarca is een stad en de naam van de provincie, zoals Antwerpen bij ons. De bossen liggen in de provincie, maar dus nog ver verwijderd van de stad. Laat ons zeggen zo een 10 uur met de bus(via Chiclayo, want er is geen rechtstreekse baan). Ik geloof niet dat ik er geraak, maar als dat zo is maak ik zeker een memorabele foto voor jou.

Hey Tine, thanks for checking out my blog. Listen, from Cusco, you take a bus to the border at Tagna, which should take about 18 hours or so... then at the border, you hire a colectivo driver to take your passport and drive you across the border to Arica, which takes about an hour total, with the border and everything. The colective costs about 9 soles, I can't remember exactly. Good luck! LEt me know if you have any questions about Chile.
